Methods to Shorten a Meteor
Sometimes it's fun to shorten your meteor during a spin session. By shrinking the size of the prop you not only change the visual effect of the toy dramatically but also open up different planes to explore that normally might not be accessible with a full length meteor. Here are a few different methods you can use to change the length of your meteor without breaking your flow.
One Handed Methods
Method #1
While spinning a figure of 8 (2 beat weave) as you cross over to the opposite side of your body wrap the thumb side of the meteor around your hand once and grab hold of it before crossing back over to the starting side. Now if you stop right here and keep weaving, the thumb side will be shorter then the pinky side and will feel much like a 3/4 length gripped weave feels. To shorten the pinky side, as you swing the meteor back to it's starting side begin to wrap the pinky end around your hand and then grab onto it when ti swings back to the proper position of a pinky grip. To exit this move release the held wrap that you wrapped second which in the above case was the pinky side. There are a few variations on this method based on which end of the meteor wraps first on which side.
Method #2
This time we will be tangling the meteor around itself until we reach the desired length and then grabbing hold of the knot. To begin do a 2 beat weave and instead of crossing the leading side of the meteor back over leave it spinning outside your hand so that the pinky side and thumb side begin to twist together at your hands. Allow this twist to keep growing until the meteor is as short as you want it, then grab hold of the knot and continue weaving. To exit this shortened grip you have to grab a hold of the meteor above or below the knot and allow it to come undone while weaving it.
Method #3
You can also shorten the meteor by doing a spiral wrap and catching both ends after they wrap around once. If you are leading into the spiral wrap with the thumb side grab a hold of both ends of the meteor after the pinky side has completed it's first wrap. This will shorten your meteor but it causes both ends to come out of one side of your hand making the meteor more difficult to control.
Two Handed Methods
All of these examples will be entered from a 2 handed grip of the meteor.
Method #1
Begin with two hands gripping the meteor so that each end is the length of a poi you can do a buzzsaw with. Start spinning in fwd on the outside of your hands as if you were spinning in the wheel plane with poi. Now do a two beat weave, with the right hand swinging over the left hand. As the right hand crosses over to the left side of your body, hand the left hand "poi" into your right hand so that it is in the pinky grip position of a meteor. Continue spinning a 2 beat weave with your right hand. If you did this hand off right there should be a loop of slack rope hanging out of your hand. You can enter this shortened grip from any two handed weave but just be sure you can do a meteor weave with the same degree of twist before trying to hand off a higher beat two handed weave.
Method #2
Do a two handed bf with your hands gripping either end at quarter length. Then just like the method above hand off one end so that you are doing a one handed bf. You should once again have a bit of slack rope hanging out of your hand.
Method #3
This is a variation on the first two two-handed methods. Instead of just handing one end of the meteor into the other hand do a hyperloop, buzzsaw or other move where the ends cross between your arms and twist the meteor up on itself. Then hand one of these twisted ends of the meteor into the other hand. This creates an interesting twist of rope around your hand and will take on various shapes depending on how many times you wrapped the meteor around itself. This works for both bf and weave hand offs.
Method #4
Now start as you would in the third method but this time bring only one end of the meteor between your arms so that it twists up on itself. Now instead of stopping your twist before it tangles all the way up, let the meteor wrap all the way up on itself then hand the twisted end into the hand that didn't do any twisting onto itself. Now you have one end twisted all the way up and the other free. release the twisted end and as the knot comes untwisted the meteor slowly lengthens.
Now these are just a few of the ways you can shorten your meteor during a spin. The one handed methods are definitely more traditional meteor based and the two handed variations especially the twisted versions are more poi based. Once you shorten your meteor a whole new range of planes is opened up and things like in-swings become possible.

Re: Shortening your Meteor while Spinning
Fri, July 24, 2009 - 12:55 PMits funny, but even if the 1-handed methods are more traditional, they are the only ones I find truly viable with a more modern short meteor. You need a bit more length to achieve the proper twists for those 2-handed variations. I love the 2-handed method #3. It is super fun and when you release, its not as far off-center as some of the others.
Method #2 of the 1-handed group was the first one I ever learned. It feels the easiest to master because you are just pausing and waiting while the inertia of the meteor does the work. It gives you plenty of time to regroup and think about where you want to take your meteor next. -

Re: Shortening your Meteor while Spinning
Fri, July 24, 2009 - 1:08 PMWell with double meteor length meteors I find the two handed stuff a bit of a stretch but with my 5 foot single meteor I can get into all of them no problem, however I do agree that with a meteor of traditional length you can get some insane twists going on. Oh SNAP! I wonder if with an extra long meteor you would be able to make compound twisted patterns around your hand since you'd have so much extra slack. there's another reason I need to make myself a long meteor again!
I can see #2 being easiest to master for some, though a bunch of meteor spinners I met had alot of trouble tangling the meteor around itself and keeping it clean.

Re: Shortening your Meteor while Spinning
Fri, July 24, 2009 - 1:18 PMFor sure. Its all about the practice, after all.
When I said "modern" meteor I guess I should have been more specific. I was referring to my double meteors @ 46 inches length. That's the one I have problems trying to shorten via tangles. I dont think I'd like trying to get a 3meter length toy try to go between my arms in a barrel roll type manuever, but 5-6 feet is great for a versatile type tool. -

Re: Shortening your Meteor while Spinning
Mon, July 27, 2009 - 2:11 PMI'm a dunce sometimes don't mind me. :p
Speaking of length, even though I favor a 5 footer I think I might have to go bigger sometime soon, as I think a good deal of the traditional meteor throws and other moves might be easier to pick up with something a bit lengthier. I'm sure if I keep at it things will eventually click.
I hope you had fun in Asheville!

Re: Shortening your Meteor while Spinning
Mon, August 3, 2009 - 6:26 PMI did indeed, though I spent most of my time way out in the hills doing hikes and stuff, rather than in town. Met a real nice guy by the name of Wade, from Greenville, spinning poi during the Bele Chere festival.
Im in the same boat, lengthwise. Horizontal rotors into bounces are a real pain to capture, so Im thinking about a 7 footer in length with some large dog toy Kongs as the weights. Im pretty sure that Im still going to want a fairly heavy end to compensate for the additional length.
Unfortunately, this kind of thing hampers some of those inside methods for shortening the meteor. -

Re: Shortening your Meteor while Spinning
Tue, August 4, 2009 - 5:12 AMGlad to hear you had a good time. I spent the majority of my time in the city when I was visiting as it rained most of the time. I did really want to get up into those hills though. I guess that's an adventure for next time though.
I shouldn't have spoken so soon about needing a longer meteor. After some work I'm able to nail the horizontal rotor bounces and tosses almost every time in the clockwise direction. I figure I might as well stick with the medium length as it's the most versatile.
You've seen the Fenfire meteor vid before right?
www.youtube.com/watch
I've been all about getting the move at 0:50 that reminds me of a matrix with contact staff. It's a brilliant move and the video shows a front and back view which is just awesome for learning the trick. Makes me wonder what else you can do using this concept... -

Re: Shortening your Meteor while Spinning
Tue, August 4, 2009 - 3:03 PMIve been trying to do that more as a shoulder move, without use of my hands. I can do a move that is probably most similar to a steve. If you can find the Dmenza video, he does this move with a really long meteor that looks like a full on angel roll. -

Re: Shortening your Meteor while Spinning
Wed, August 5, 2009 - 6:41 AMI've seen the Dmenza video, that dude is just plain sick! : )
I enjoy the variation in the vid I linked even though it's not contact. It still looks cool and feels neat when you nail it. I think that there have to be some awesome variations on the movement.
So when you do a steve with meteor have you gotten the meteor to go down your arm behind the neck at up the other? I get it to go down the arm but when it hits my shoulder I end up wrapping both ends around my body and then when they unwrap do a frontside? SNES double wrap at the other shoulder then have it roll down the arm. It still look neat but I can't seem to get a straight steve for the life of me. Any tips? -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Shortening your Meteor while Spinning
Fri, August 7, 2009 - 5:57 AMI like the idea of an SNES, Ill have to try that out.
When I start the steve, its all the same, but because it doesnt roll quite as much as a staff, when it wraps around my neck, the leading end tends to be way off-center and starts to wrap the front of my neck. (I think you really have to raise your arm higher than a staff steve and let it do more of a drop, since the leash acts different than a staff) (*I try to stretch at the hips and pose a bit yoga like, pointing one arm to the sky and the other to my knee, but that's often hard to remember mid-spin).
Once that leading edge catches the front side of my neck, I do a quick turn with the direction of the meteor while Im raising my other arm. The steve tends to lose a lot of speed by this point, so the trailing end is lower than it would be for a staff. So, I can almost skip rolling it on my upper arm and have it hit my upper arm to wrist to hand. I totally have to keep turning during this, so by the time I've finished the move, I think I've about done a 180 turn.
Once in a while I can get it super clean, where the center point stays closer to my neck and it looks more like a traditional steve. But because it normally gets the end closer to my neck, I don't think I'd like to try it on fire yet. Im still working on cleaning it up. Most of the time it looks a little crazy to me, but you can still see the steve happening and I've been told that from an outsider's perspective its still totally cool looking.
When I think about it more, the pinky side goes forward at my elbow, thumb side at my neck, and then pinky side back to my other arm. The awesome part is if you can center the leash enough to get the pinky side to do a rotation at the neck before it wraps the neck. You have to kind of look at your shoelaces for a sec and have it going fast to do that.
