I think I may have spent too much time on weaving patterns early in my practice since my muscle memory seems locked into those motions somewhat. For instance, I can do a single-handed rotor for 5-6 rotations before I start to wind and go into a weave. For the life of me, I can't do a two-handed rotor. I have followed the advice of all the tutorials I can find: practice first with a staff. I have practiced with staff. Still no luck.

So, does anyone have any useful advice or better yet a tutorial they can direct me to? I know I have to practice more, but I feel like there is something I am doing that is fundamentally wrong.

So there hasn't been much activity on this tribe (or most tribes) lately, so here's a rather lengthy post I wrote discussing the different types of weaves that are possible while spinning a meteor. Comments, questions, and corrections would be greatly appreciated.

=========================================================================================================

Breakdown of Weaves w/ Single Meteor

Ever since I started playing with a meteor I was confounded by the fact that I could do a fwd thumb led 2 beat weave (figure of 8) just fine but whenever I went to do a rev thumb led 2 beat it never felt right. In fact it felt more like a 2 beat off set weave with poi. So in error I figured that that was just the way meteor worked instead of exploring further. The other day while practicing my fwd 3 beat weave, I decided to start messing around with doing all of the weaves known to me pinky led in both fwd and reverse to find new variations. After a bit of playing I started doing a pinky led 2 beat in reverse and "Voila!" a breakthrough was made. The equivalent in rev of the fwd thumb led 2 beat is a pinky led 2 beat. All along I never made the leap that when you switch direction you also need to change from either thumb to pinky led or vice versa. This new information/revelation was the key to allow me to map out all of the variations of weaves that are possible with a single meteor. It turned out that for either direction be it forward or reverse there is only one weave of equal degrees of twist for a given beat count (i.e. a 3 beat weave). Then on top of these basic equally twisted weaves, there are loads of offset weave variations to be explored as well. Here's a run through of these weave combinations starting with the equal weaves and moving on to offsets.

*Note: When I am counting the beats of these weaves I am counting from the top of the circles for one end of the meteor on both sides then adding the two sides together.

Equally Twisted Weaves

The Most Basic of Weaves

Fwd 2 beat Thumb led
Rev 2 beat Pinky led

I determined that these two weaves are the simplest weave pattern possible with a meteor. If you do a fwd pinky led two beat or a rev thumb led two beat they end up being offset and therefore lack the symmetry of the two weaves written above. In fact each direction has two basic 2 beat offset weaves which become an equally twisted 4 beat weave when combined, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. Since these offset 2 beats are not equal in degrees of twist from one side to the other the only true 2 beat weaves with a meteor are the pair mentioned above.

The 3 beat Weave

Fwd 3 beat pinky thumb switch
Rev 3 beat thumb pinky switch

For either direction the side of the hand listed first determines which hand is crossing over to the opposite side of the body. So by the name "fwd 3 beat pinky thumb switch" I am saying that while spinning fwd with your right hand your pinky side will be crossing over to the left side (opposite) side of the body and then you will switch so the thumb led side will lead back over to the right side. By adding this switch between thumb side and pinky side you add an extra beat making this a 3 beat weave.

The 4 beat Weave

Fwd 4 beat pinky led
Rev 4 beat thumb led

There is only one equal 4 beat weave for a given direction. This is also where my old confusion came from as I thought that the rev 4 beat thumb led was the simplest equally twisted version of a rev weave. As mentioned earlier combining the two basic 2 beat offset weaves for a given direction makes a 4 beat.

The 5 Beat Weave

Fwd 5 beat thumb pinky switch (starts with a 3 beat pinky thumb switch)
Rev 5 beat pinky thumb switch (starts with a 3 beat thumb pinky switch)

Now it is possible to do 5 beat weaves with a meteor by adding a wrist twist or wrist wrap onto either side of your 3 beat weave. To do a fwd 5 beat start with a fwd 3 beat pinky thumb switched weave and add an extra twist of the wrist or a wrist wrap forcing the thumb to now lead over to the opposite side of the body and the pinky to lead back. By adding a twist on either side you now have a 5 beat weave.

6 , 7, and beyond Beat Weaves

Fwd 6 beat thumb led
Rev 6 beat pinky led

The 6 beat and the other higher beat weaves start getting into iffy territory for me. To do an equally twisted 6 beat you must do a wrist wrap on both sides of your body which makes me feel that maybe you are not truly weaving anymore. I know there is a semi wrist wrap in the 5 beat but it becomes much more pronounced in the 6 beat as one end of the meteor is wrapped fully around your wrist. Still this can come in handy and is easily broken down into multiple different offset weaves. The seven beat weave is made by adding a thumb pinky switch onto a 6 beat offset weave. You can also make higher beat weaves by adding more and more wrists wraps to a given side but remember the more you wrap up the more uneven the ends of the meteor become.

Offset Weaves

Now unlike the equal weaves all of the offset weaves have an unequal amount of twist when comparing one side of the body to the other. Pretty much if you take any of the equal weaves above and split them into smaller pieces you'll have an offset weave.

2 beat offsets

The offset 2 beats are quite numerous. As mentioned in the beginning the four basic 2 beat offsets are:

fwd 2 beat pinky led same side
fwd 2 beat pinky led opp side
rev 2 beat thumb led same side
rev 2 beat thumb led opp side

These are derived from the 2 equal 4 beat weaves. So by same side and opp side in the above descriptions I am referring to which segment of the corresponding 4 beat the 2 beat is derived from. For example the fwd 2 beat pinky led same side refers to the 2 beat that is made from the crossover from the same side of your body to the opposite side during a 4 beat. Also, if you break apart a fwd 3 beat weave you'll get a thumb led 2 beat and an offset same side pinky led 2 beat. To derive the other offset two beat from a 3 beat you need to do an offset three beat.

There are other 2 beat offsets but instead of mentioning them all try breaking the equal weaves apart at various points to create your own offset two beats. (There are some really fun 2 beat offsets that can be made from the 5 beat weave.)

3 beat Offsets

One way to derive the 3 beat offset weaves is to break apart the 5 beat weave while another is to add either a thumb pinky or a pinky thumb switch (depending on the direction and side of the body) to an offset 2 beat derived from a 5 beat.

Say you have a fwd 5 beat weave being spun in your right hand. When you add a wrist twist onto the opposite (left) side of the body and cross back to the same side (right) immediately do a thumb switch instead of unwinding and cross back over to the left untwist and re-twist then cross back over. If you count the beats on either side of this you will have a 3 beat weave except it will be offset because there is more twist on the opposite side of the body. You can make another off set by doing the same thing except working with the twist starting on the same side of the body though this offset 3 beat is much harder.

Other Offset Weaves and Why you should discover them

There are many other offset weaves besides the ones I've mentioned. Even though you can have the same amount of beats by doing the easier equal weaves you still want to learn all the offset weaves as well. There are some interesting properties that arise when turning the offsets and mixing and matching pieces of offset and normal weaves which will help build your overall control of the meteor. Now I also feel that as isolations, flowers, hybrids, cateyes and other plays on driving styles are investigated deeper with meteor these transitions between offsets and regular weaves will lead to interesting possibilities for manipulation and in some cases will be the only way to execute certain combinations. Even by just turning different kinds of weaves you get some cool effects.

In-swings, Polyrhythm, one beats and more

As a side note it is possible to do polyrhythmic weaves with a meteor as well as incorporating in-swings (I know opp led ones work) into your flow. I have not played with these all too much but here's what I have worked with. To do polyrhythm in a weave try doing two swings of the thumb led side of the meteor on the opposite side of your body when doing a fwd 2 beat thumb led 2 beat. In the time it takes the pinky side to swing around you can have completed two rotations and then lead back to the same side of your body with the thumb side. This can be done in all sorts of weave configurations so please experiment and report back. With in-swings you'll either need to us a shorter meteor or you can do a meteor shortening combo to make your longer meteor more manageable. As of a few moments ago I found a few different in-swing combos and some very interesting possibilities. I didn't discuss one beats earlier on in this paper because you do not weave them but I feel that they are very important (though hard to master) to add to your flow. I am not sure at the moment but I think that throwing in a one beat can be similar to doing a same led in-swing and at the least can add some interesting variety to your weaves.

In conclusion, I hope that this article will be useful to all the meteor people out there and will cause some new questions to be asked, boundaries to be pushed and open up new territory to be explored. Meteor play is such a fun skill to learn and though it takes some getting used to and is not as easily picked up as say poi or staff I do hope more people will begin to discover the joys of working with this wonderful prop.

Hey all, so I'm gearing up for Firedrums and i want to build myself a meteor as they look like a lot of fun. I do quite a bit of contact staff, and figure that a meteor will be a fun extension from that and will allow me to start exploring aspects of poi as well as rope dart (yay!)

As seems to be the problem for most people though, I'm trying to figure out how to keep the flaming head of fury attached to the rope and not fly off. . . . cause that'd be bad.

Anyone have any idea how much force the ends of the meteor will be putting on the components? I'm thinking of getting some 8mm static climbing rope, which should be plenty strong enough, to use as the rope. I'll put about 6 inches of chain in between the rope and the head, and i'm going to construct it so that i can use the same rope/chain part with both practice heads and real firey ones.

my concern though is whether ball bearing swivels (rated at 300 lbs http://tinyurl.com/as3yuk) and split rings (rated at 220lbs http://tinyurl.com/b3txhw) will be able to stand up to the force exerted on either end. . . am i worrying to much and these will stand up fine, or should i consider other components? any other thoughts or ideas for construction?

Shortening your Meteor while Spinning

Article #2

Methods to Shorten a Meteor

Sometimes it's fun to shorten your meteor during a spin session. By shrinking the size of the prop you not only change the visual effect of the toy dramatically but also open up different planes to explore that normally might not be accessible with a full length meteor. Here are a few different methods you can use to change the length of your meteor without breaking your flow.

One Handed Methods

Method #1

While spinning a figure of 8 (2 beat weave) as you cross over to the opposite side of your body wrap the thumb side of the meteor around your hand once and grab hold of it before crossing back over to the starting side. Now if you stop right here and keep weaving, the thumb side will be shorter then the pinky side and will feel much like a 3/4 length gripped weave feels. To shorten the pinky side, as you swing the meteor back to it's starting side begin to wrap the pinky end around your hand and then grab onto it when ti swings back to the proper position of a pinky grip. To exit this move release the held wrap that you wrapped second which in the above case was the pinky side. There are a few variations on this method based on which end of the meteor wraps first on which side.

Method #2

This time we will be tangling the meteor around itself until we reach the desired length and then grabbing hold of the knot. To begin do a 2 beat weave and instead of crossing the leading side of the meteor back over leave it spinning outside your hand so that the pinky side and thumb side begin to twist together at your hands. Allow this twist to keep growing until the meteor is as short as you want it, then grab hold of the knot and continue weaving. To exit this shortened grip you have to grab a hold of the meteor above or below the knot and allow it to come undone while weaving it.

Method #3

You can also shorten the meteor by doing a spiral wrap and catching both ends after they wrap around once. If you are leading into the spiral wrap with the thumb side grab a hold of both ends of the meteor after the pinky side has completed it's first wrap. This will shorten your meteor but it causes both ends to come out of one side of your hand making the meteor more difficult to control.

Two Handed Methods

All of these examples will be entered from a 2 handed grip of the meteor.

Method #1

Begin with two hands gripping the meteor so that each end is the length of a poi you can do a buzzsaw with. Start spinning in fwd on the outside of your hands as if you were spinning in the wheel plane with poi. Now do a two beat weave, with the right hand swinging over the left hand. As the right hand crosses over to the left side of your body, hand the left hand "poi" into your right hand so that it is in the pinky grip position of a meteor. Continue spinning a 2 beat weave with your right hand. If you did this hand off right there should be a loop of slack rope hanging out of your hand. You can enter this shortened grip from any two handed weave but just be sure you can do a meteor weave with the same degree of twist before trying to hand off a higher beat two handed weave.

Method #2

Do a two handed bf with your hands gripping either end at quarter length. Then just like the method above hand off one end so that you are doing a one handed bf. You should once again have a bit of slack rope hanging out of your hand.

Method #3

This is a variation on the first two two-handed methods. Instead of just handing one end of the meteor into the other hand do a hyperloop, buzzsaw or other move where the ends cross between your arms and twist the meteor up on itself. Then hand one of these twisted ends of the meteor into the other hand. This creates an interesting twist of rope around your hand and will take on various shapes depending on how many times you wrapped the meteor around itself. This works for both bf and weave hand offs.

Method #4

Now start as you would in the third method but this time bring only one end of the meteor between your arms so that it twists up on itself. Now instead of stopping your twist before it tangles all the way up, let the meteor wrap all the way up on itself then hand the twisted end into the hand that didn't do any twisting onto itself. Now you have one end twisted all the way up and the other free. release the twisted end and as the knot comes untwisted the meteor slowly lengthens.

Now these are just a few of the ways you can shorten your meteor during a spin. The one handed methods are definitely more traditional meteor based and the two handed variations especially the twisted versions are more poi based. Once you shorten your meteor a whole new range of planes is opened up and things like in-swings become possible.

I've finally found a design I like for building my own fire meteor, but I am trying to decide on the diameter of the rope. Right now I have 2 practice meteors: one with 3/8" rope and the other with a thin 1/4" rope. I actually like the thinner one better, but Im not sure how that transfers over to fire meteor. So what size rope does everyone use here?

Im asking because Matthew from Flamma Aeterna advised getting the much thicker size ropes because they would be easier to grab. Im not that uncomfortable with the idea of thin rope, but I prefer to research it a little more first.

btw, the design is a Kevlar tether with a cable/rope thimble on the ends (see link: http://www.hardwareandtools.com/invt/6722110), then 1 foot of twisted oval link chain attached to Flamma Aeterna's EggPoi (see link: http://www.flammaaeterna.com/p-944-egg-fire-poi-heads.aspx)

To me, tangles are one of the most interesting areas to explore with double meteor. Since you have 4 ends (I'll use the term heads) to tangle as compared to 2 with poi there is much more room for variation. So far I've found three basic relationships in regards to tangling double meteors.

The first relationship involves tangling the 2 left hand heads and 2 right hand heads at the same time. This is actually the simplest way to tangle a double meteor. It is relatively easy to do a hyperloop or airwrap like this since you do the exact same motions as you would with poi. Oh and yes these do untangle with ease and look really neat sicne all the heads shrink onto each other then expand as you end the tangle.

The second relationship is tangling only one head on the left and one head on the right. This is much more difficult then the above tangles since it requires two of the heads to keep spinning while the other two tangle. The easiest way (IMO) to try this out is to do a bf with one hand and then a weave in wall plane with the other. When the weave comes to the front wall plane get one of the ends to tangle with the downswing of one of the heads in the bf and you can get an airwrap to happen while the other heads keep spinning. I've gotten this to work with two weaves while doing a reel but it's much harder to control. The way I am most interested in tangling a double meteor is by tangling only two heads out of a weave so in theory you could do an infinite tangle with two heads while the other 2 are spinning outside your hand which would look wicked.

The third relationship which I find to be hardest is tangling two heads to only one of the other heads. This just feels awkward but when it works it sometimes looks really cool because the 2 heads tangling on the one become same time for a moment. I have only gotten this to work just a couple of times well so I don't have much to say about this relationship other then that it is possible.

Where to go from here? Well if you can master the second relationship in all of it;s variations you could eventually do some really awesomely complex patterns. For example:

Do a weave and hyperloop the thumb led head on the right hand with the pinky led on the left. After that untangles tangle the pinky led on the right with the thumb led on the left and hyperloop back across to the other side.

Another one would be tangling two heads in an airwrap after they untangle tangle the other two heads in a an airwrap and keep alternating which heads tangle i.e. likeboth thumb leds airwrap then both pinky then both thumbs.

I hope this was at least interesting. For me it's good to get these thoughts out of my head. Do any of you out there have any itneresting move ideas or thoughts on any of this. Theoretical musings are encouraged!

spinmeteor.org is intended to be a free community-written resource (wiki) for information about spinning meteor. Right now its has very little content but it's all setup and waiting to be filling with data. My hope is that by making this available people like Chris B, Robert, Squid (and the rest of us) will find it easier to store our definitions and descriptions there and then post a link in this tribe (or anywhere else).

Right now the wiki has namespaces to defined Terms, Moves and Fuels. Here are some examples:

http://wiki.spinmeteor.org/Move:Butterfly
http://wiki.spinmeteor.org/Move:5_beat_weave
http://wiki.spinmeteor.org/Fuel:White_gas

The line between Terms and Moves gets a bit blurry so I'm hoping Robert, Chris B (and anyone else interested) will in helping me draw a finer line. For example should we consider "butterfly" a term and then consider "forward butterfly" and "reverse butterfly" move names? Lets discuss. =]

I hope this is something you all embrace whole heartedly. I think is has the potential to become a great resource we all can shape and share. Feel free to make your self a free account and just start adding content and if you have any questions please feel free to email me.

Whether it's being unsure of correct terms, disagreements over which phrase to use for a concept, confusing ill-fit wording for descriptions, or down right that there isn't terminology yet in place to describe a particular move or idea communication is not at it's best. Would anyone like to work out some basic definitions and descriptions for at least the basic moves with me? I tend to base my descriptions on poi terminology for the simple fact that I know poi best and it's easiest for me to think in those terms. This does not mean I am opposed to using other terms, it's just how the wheels turn in my head.

I was thinking that terms for the basic weaves, bf family of moves, and that single staff like btb hand off move from low to high a fountain maybe? (<----indication of my terrible knowledge of terms) need to be clarified and decided upon. Would we use windmill and corkscrew in meteor terminology for the moves that are similar to the poi versions? For weaves will we use degrees or beats or neither? That's a good starting point I think.

What does everyone else think? Is this all just a watse of time? I think it would be a good idea. I cite the way I have been describing moves in my recent posts as an example that at least I could use some clarification on some key terms and phrases.

So the discussion on 3 beat weaving double meteor has gotten me to thinking. Is it possible to do a 5 beat weave with single meteor cleanly with no thru-wraps or tangling. Since I think there is a direct relationship between poi weaving and meteor weaving the relationship being a 2 beat poi weave with double meteor requires 2 2 beat meteor weaves while a 3 beat poi weave requires 2 3 beat meteor weaves. It seems to follow that to do a 5 beat poi weave with double meteor you would need to do 5 beat single meteor weaves.

Does anyone have any info on 5 beat single meteor weaves? Do you think that the only way to accomplish this is by thru-wrapping or tangling? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Alright so I've become near obsessed with learning a proper 3 beat with double meteor. I think that I am on the right path and have had some minor success though the move still eludes me. I've had fwd 2 beats down for a while now but up until a few weeks ago I was not able to do a true 3 beat with single meteor and therein I believe lies the key.

I think to do a 3 beat weave with double meteor you have to weave together to 3 beat single meteor weaves. This would mean when one hand crossees to the other side it's going to be pinky led and on the return it will switch back to thumb led.

i.e. As the right hand crosses over to the left side (as in a 3 beat with poi) the right hand is leading with a pinky led 3 beat while the left is following with the thumb led portion of the 3 beat. Then the left immediately switches back to pinky led to cross over to the right while the right hand follows thumb.

In my head this makes sense although I have only gotten the transition to work a handful of times. The timing is very tricky with this but once a comfortable flow is established this would be one heck of a beautiful move. I do wonder if maybe meteor, since there are 4 heads, makes doing a normal 3 beat with poi impossible and instead would need a more complicated hand/wrist/arm movement to get a similar effect. Although my intuition does tell me a traditional 3 beat weave should work.

So if any of you out there in meteorland that are comfortable with pinky led 3 beat weaves with both hands would you be willing to have a whack at this to help me test my theory? It could be that it is just not possible to do but I really don't think anything is impossible especially in the spinning arts. If my description of what I mean isn't quite clear I'd be happy to elaborate. Even if the idea of double meteor spinning doesn't appeal to you do you feel that the theory is sound? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

O' Happy Day!

so i put together a practice meteor (so i dont totally destroy the fire set). i really have no idea what im doing with it, so the design will likely change. it is currently about 7 feet, with 5/8s inch rope. i might make it shorter, but i saw on here longer is better for contact (?), and that is where my interest is. suggestions would be welcome (stiffer rope? thinner?) im sure any which way i will figure out what i like.

the main issue though is that i have no idea what im doing. my background is only poi, and only for about a year. ive heard meteor is nothing like staff though, so should i even bother learning that, if that isnt my interest? and the poi stuff doesnt translate as well the longer rope. i know im asking a lot... but i dont need exact instruction, just an idea of where to go to figure it out for myself :)

Hi everybody,
i have a question for yawlls. i was thinking, i could ask this same question in the poi forum, but i think there's way too many poseurs over there, unlike here in the true hardcoreness of meteor tribe.

now that i've flattered your heegos maybe you'll think about my question.

a couple years ago i was inspired by a man who came to the states from Deutchland to play for the summer, his name was andy house and some of y'alls here know and love him as i do. anyways, this man inspired me to steal a great many of his sweet, sexy and innovative poi moves, 1 dimension of which was to seamlessly grab the pois in 1 hand and do meteor style moves, a technique i've since mastered, although i'll never do anything as clean and pretty as andy...

now i'm at a point where there is nothing i would love more than to be able to seamlessly be able to link/unlink my pois such that i could do meteor throws if i wanted to, or 1 handed rotors or contact stuff what have you, you get the idea. right now what i do is just grab both in 1 hand and hold them together. if i had something on my handles that could serve to easily yet securely link them up, and just as easily unlink, i could go from poi to meteor and back to poi to my heart's content in a single performance.

now this idea is not new, and this very same andy who had already possessed a mastery back then that mere mortals could but dream uponst, had already been working on a solution and devised some sort of a loop and button system that allowed him to perform this very feat, to the shock and amazement of all who beheld it. personally, i can see how this is effective but i don't like the fact that basically it means there are no real handles on your poi.

so i would like to hear some other ideas, if you gots any. personally i use heavy, custom made metal handles, so working w/ metal is definitely an option. I have a couple of ideas myself which i will draw up and post here at some later opportunity, but i'd like to see discussion stir up some other designs that could work for this - after all, yours might be cooler and smartier.

one last point to stress is that this linking and unlinking has to be done WHILE spinning. that's kinda the whole point. if i have to stop spinning to link them up, a good 95% of the magic will quickly dissipate as i stand there, tying a knot in my chains...

Hello, this is my first time posting in this forum so I figure I'd introduce myself. My name is Chris and I started playing with meteor about a month and a half ago and I gotta say I love it. Before picking up meteor I had been spinning poi for around 5 years and also play with staff, double staff, rope dart and just about anything that can be spun. As of late though I just can't seem to put the meteors down, I guess in a sense it's like a new challenging way to spin poi because in my mind they seem so similar, but thats not surprising seeming how all the spinning arts appear to just run together in my mind these days. Anyway onto the reason for this post.

First I was wondering if anyone has played with contact meteor or knows of any videos. Since the meteor has qualities that are similar to both poi and staff, I've been trying to incorporate contact moves inherent to those two props. So far I found I can wibble a meteor and have gotten a half steve to work once. There are also some other staff moves I do with meteor but don't know the name of them and some that are like a weird hybrid of poi and staff contact tricks.

Has anyone here played with anything like this? If so it would be great to hear your experiences or even just some ideas you might have because at the moment it's all just experimentation for me.

The other question is does anyone play with double meteor? And if so what kind of stuff do you play with? I imagine being able to do all sorts of crazy tangles and weird stall combos. Not to mention how cool off center grip stuff will look when doing double meteor. At the moment I have the fwd 2 beat weaves down but can't get the rev at all, a bunch of reels and can even do a hyperloop involving all four heads of the meteors. The possiblities are endless.

Once again if you have any thoughts or comments or know of any videos of double meteor I would love to hear them.

Thanks for reading and hopefully I'll get some good feedback from this post. Unfortunately I probably won't get online again for a few more days at the earliest so if I don't respond in a timely manner I apologize in advance. Have a wonderful weekend!
I'll start off with my emerging ideas for a meteor, then list a few specific questions that are still outstanding. Feel free to comment on any aspect of any of this.. I'm totally open to suggestions and collaboration. Keep in mind that these design considerations are essentially for a fire meteor, though I'm making a practice one first (partly for testing and cost, partly because I like my practice toys to emulate the instruments of fire..)

Afterwards.. I'll add a post with the conversation that Jared and I have had so far.

sooooo.. onward!

What's on my mind now:
. either a normal 4 bite monkey fist, or a moonblaze style cathedral (both from poi), with an embedded eyebolt
. wick eyebolt --> quick link --> x" length of ball-chain --> rope
. I like the idea of a sheath for the rope handle.. this might also be nice to cover the ball chain in an effort to protect the spinner
. weight, I'll leave up to the poi I end up making, but I don't see any reason to intentionally add weights of any sort, to the wicks themselves.. especially because of the ball chain.

Questions:
. type of rope for the handle
. length of ball chain (12 - 18?)
. *attachment method for ball chain <--> rope*

so I'm working on some practice meteor - by some I mean experimenting a bit with variations on materials and (the simple) aspects of the design - thanks in part, to a lot of the information here.

One thing I can't find though, is any reference to an actual weight of the wicks folks have built, regardless of head style.. though it does seem most people are making their wicks heavier than regular poi.

so.. what do you folks suggest? my current poi wicks are about 5oz each, as a 4 bite monkey fist. I understand weight may vary from person to person.. but I'm curious how much heavier meteors tend to be, in comparison to poi.
- what are the benefits (and cons too, I guess) of making a meteor (fire/practice doesn't matter) with a single piece of kevlar rope (such that the monkey's fists are directly *part* of the meteor, not attached in some way)?

- when making a monkey's fist as just described, should the knot be modified such that the rope doesn't come out one side, but rather in the middle of a set of fingers?

- if you weren't making the monkey's fist as part of the meteor, but instead used links and some chain, what's the best (read: most reliable, not going to *kill* someone during performance) way to attach the sucker?

I want to thank all the fire community for all the input you guys have provided to us and, and I would like to get some more feed back. Trick Concepts will be introducing Meteors and Rope Darts within the next month or so and we want to make sure we make them how you want. Our tentative plan is to offer several “poi type” fire head options for the wick, followed by 1 ft of twisted link chain and then securely attach it to a rope. Up to this point, I think it is fairly straight forward. My big question is what type of rope is preferred. I am looking at the following options:

1.	Kevlar with Kevlar core.
2.	Cotton bondage type rope
3.	Soft braided cotton with Nylon Core
4.	Cotton with steel cable core.
5.	Twisted cotton

We will consider offering more than one option if there is a lot of different preferences.

Here are the advantages and disadvantages I see with each. There may be some factors I have forgotten.

1.	Kevlar with Kevlar core: This is a good durable rope with medium flexibility. It is pricy, but the price is no prohibitive. I am mostly wondering if there are any undesirable properties, such as hard on the hands, etc.

2.	Cotton bondage type rope: This will probably be your softest and more flexible rope. It is probably also the weakest, but at ½” diameter, it should be plenty strong.

3.	Soft braided cotton with Nylon Core: This rope should be easy on the hands, and quite strong with the nylon core. This is a fairly flexible rope. I am not overly concerned with the nylon melting, because it is encased in the cotton and there will be good separation between the fire and the rope. This rope may have slight design patterns in it because it is used for nautical purposes. If the demand is sufficient, we may be able to have it custom made or dyed.

4.	Cotton with steel cable core: This is a unique option because it can eliminate the link chain. The handle part can be made of soft cotton, and it can be striped down to cable on the fire ends. This makes for a continuous tool with no links, chains, knots or couplings along its length. Because of the steel core, this rope will be a bit stiffer. We currently only have this available up to 3/8” diameter, but we can probably find larger if there is a demand.

5.	Twisted cotton: The twisted cotton will probably be harder on the hands and will be fairly stiff. This rope has the option of being braided back upon itself for a clean loop.

If you know of another type of rope that we have missed, let us know. We have ruled out any ropes that will melt.

What size rope is preferred? I was planning on using ½” or similar.

Do you prefer a stiffer rope or a softer rope?

Has anyone made a meteor that has a rigid handle in the middle, with chain coming out each end? I would make it from an aluminum tube for the handle and put a chuck swivel on each end. I am not sure if this has been done, but it would be like a looser version of a segmented staff.

Anyhow, this is your chance to influence our designs before we start making product. We greatly appreciate any input.

I am really new to meteor (about 2 months) and fire art in general. The problem is everyone I know that does this kind of art is on the other side of the country from me, so I have to go about it on my own. I had a question about transitioning from one trick to another. Most of them seem fairly natural to me except for coming into and out of the helicopter. Could someone enlighten me on a way to do this smoothly without getting a face full of fire? I was thinking of going down into the helicopter perpendicular to the ground (windmill is what someone called it, I think) and then into something else. However, this seems like a long transition to get out of the helicopter. Thanks for any input you guys have.

The primary problem is that I don't want too much fire for my first burnable meteor, the thing is scary enough without fuel. This is a problem due to the fact that heavier meteors are just easier to spin, the more rotational momentum the better.

So, here's the quandary: how can we maximize the wick weight without having a huge amount of surface area (ie. flames), and not use a metal core for the wick that would 1) rust and 2) cause more damage than fire ever could on impact. I've got an idea or two, but I'd like to hear what other people have before I throw them out there.

i'm making me a new meteor, as my other one was so beaten up that it got tired and turned into a dart...heh.
so this new one i'm making is gonna be two monkey fists(with four "fingers" each side...so it's gonna be big).
my last design had kevlar rope for the rope in the middle.
but i don't have those kinds of funds right now, especially with more of my rope going to hoops.
so i'm going to put chain between the monkey fists.

my problem is that i need to attach the knots to the rope in a secure fashion the will use minimal rope.
i was thinking ideally of using metal clips.
i don't know what they are really called but they cinch the rope against itself and are tight enough to keep it there.
however i think i would need special equipment to do this.

so does anyone have any ideas as to how to attach a monkey fist to a chain via quick link?
given that, there are no meteor spinners, outside my troupe. so learning meteor in a relative vacumm, you make stuff up and then you watch jet li, jacky chan, and that other guy....what's his name?....ah bruce lee. sorry.

anywho, of the online stuff i've seen a bucha birds being kicked around and alot of wraps.

okay, now wraps are fun, i know i know. girating hips and all.

but what i'm really excited about is, uh. how exactly do i explain this?

alright so in yes, romeo must die, there is a wonderful fight scene with a fire hose as a meteor hammer. there's one part where he wraps it under one leg, grabs part of the length, and then as he unwraps his legs he lets go of the length and it hits his opponent in the face.

what i'm talking about is the grabbing a length, and shooting it.
anyone here know what i'm talking about?

look, here's my ulteior motive: i want discussion. dammit i joined this group and now i wanna talk.

so that's what i've been doing and that's why i'm telling everyone else, not because i want to keep it a secret, but because i want to talk and share and hopefully something good will come from it.

Is there any kind of hits or things i can do to get better, any tricks (a how to) that any of you can give me?
so far i can do half/full/tripple spins right handed.
transfer left and right hand.
and half/full spins with left and right backwards.
i can also do the helicopter thing, and almost throw it up.
i can only do helicopter if i start that way i cant spin into it or out of it.

I've noticed in my three strand monkey fist (wrapped around an old marble) there were pretty big gaps. In the five strand wrapped around a bouncy ball I had a difficult time getting everything perfectly symmetrical. Is it just a matter of practice and taking time to pull each strand tight and adjust consistantly throughout or does anyone have any tricks? The five strand monkey fist looks pretty nifty until you start comparing each of the sections and notice the strands even in one section don't always have the same length.

also, what are good beginning moves with a meteor... i already do this one hand weave like thing (like the 3 beat weave of poi but slightly different) and i also have this left hand contact spin around spin around that's alot like a contact staff move which i then throw over to the other side before my hand touched the ends and or wicks.... anyways back to the point
what are some basic moves and if you guys think my design is nasty where are there webpages that show how to make those monkey fist ropes?
Throw a helicopter, and while it is in the air above you get into the position in the middle of a behind-the-back transfer for a helicopter (bent over forwards with hands behind). Use the recieving hand (depending upon the rotation) to catch behind the back while using the other hand to protect your face or cover your eyes. SUPER CRAZY.
It's basically throwing a big horizontal circle, then catching it behind your back while bending over with your eyes closed. I'd love to prove it's not a joke, but can't make it to BM this year. Anybody else working on trick catches? I think staff people do this kinda thing, right?

my question is; about how long did it take for yall to get relatively proficient at meteors. i do staff and poi, and neither took me this long to catch on to. with meteor so far i have only about five "tricks" (helicoptor, btb helicoptor, one handed butterfly, 1h fig 8s, and windmills....each taking a very long time to "get") and pretty much no transitions. is this normal??? or are meteors just not my thing, and i should go back to poi, lol. how long have yall been spinning meteors? and how long did it take for you to be mildly decent at it?
Id like to arrange a Rope Dart & Meteor Gathering on thursday durring the day. Hopefully in a large shade structure of some kind, we're not going to get much done in the hot sun.

(walking, running, rotating, somersaulting, etc) I'm usually pretty much in one spot, and rotate around a bit. I've seen the women of the Shanghai Circus do somesaults, and move around a fair amount. It seems like rotating can allow you to get your rope spinning really fast, and allow you to unwind the wraps as they are wrapping. This is quite handy when attempting to avoid garroting oneself. ^_^

in the last couple of days Musashi had the chance to show me a few contact meteor moves and the horizontal one handed rotor. (thanks again!)

The trick to it was the placement of your hand near the 2/3 mark toward one end rather then in the center. This really helped a lot when pushing the meteor around with two finders and then letting it roll around the back side to get pushed around again.

This of center placement make your torer look of center (cuz it is) and to some cherries out there it looks bad. However, when you slide even a few inches out of this sweet spot your meteorb looses its splay in one direction of the other so you can imagin how trying to pull this off closer to the middle is hard.

This is different then the way Lareina taught me (over some toast) to do the two handed horizontal rotor. Its also different from the way I have seen the virticle one handed rotor. Both seem to be done just off the center like most moves.

Mushashi also apears to do the two handed horizontal roter more off to one side rather then tighter in the center where I find my sweet spot.

has onyone been able to pull this off with one hand in the same (more central) position that some of us are used to??

I would love to have a mote evenly splayed out over the head rotor rather then sucha wobely concusion machine =]

They could throw them straight up, and catch it themselves, or throw them to each other. Also, they could go down on the ground, lying on their back, and kick it way up into the air. I was impressed. I've been experimenting and found that if you spin it relatively fast, and then just sort of push upwards, that it will fly off your hand and up into the air. If you push in the middle it goes staright up, and if you push from off center, then it flies away from you in an arc. Catching it is tough (for me...). Any of you have experience with this? Any suggestions?
